We are proud to have Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ linebacker Mr. Derrick
Brooks on our cover. He is a real gentleman who has a heart for
children and our community. Mr. Brooks invests his time, heart and
money in our community. He is often recognized for his hard work
in the community as much as he is for his hard hits on the
football field; Mr. Brooks remains one of the most
community-minded players in the NFL. Through his foundation,
Derrick Brooks Charities, Inc., Mr. Brooks has made it his life's
mission to impact positively the lives of youth in the Tampa Bay
area. Derrick said, “What I am most proud of in his life was his
personal relationship with Jesus Christ, his family and when a
child looks up at him and tells him how he has impacted their
life”.
In August of 2007, Derrick realized one of his lifelong goals with
the opening of the Brooks-DeBartolo Collegiate High School, a
Hillsborough County sponsored Charter High School. There are over
250 students enrolled in the 2008-2009 school year with goal of
reaching a total enrollment of 500. Through a partnership with the
DeBartolo family and a strong board of directors, Derrick was able
to oversee the implementation of the only traditional charter high
school in the Bay area. Brooks-DeBartolo's mission is to provide a
rigorous and relevant academic environment where both students and
teachers achieve excellence through high expectations,
collaboration, and support.
The school is very impressive. A lovely student took her time to
show us every classroom. She told us how proud she was to be a
student at BDCHS and how each teacher and the administration of
the school were helping her to reach her goals.
Dr. Phildra J. Swagger, executive, director/principal, is
passionate about the BDCHS, her students, staff, and Derrick
Brooks. Dr Swagger said, “BDCHS is founded on the belief that,
given the necessary resources and opportunities, every child has
the potential to realize his/her dreams”. Dr. Swagger is the
leader of a team at BDCHS that is molding our future leaders to
realize their dreams.
Derrick, keep doing what you’re doing on and off the field, the
community needs you. Thank you!
From the Heart, Barbara

Prevent Eye Injuries
Due to Sports & Toys
By Mark A. Sibley, M.D.,
F.A.C.S.
Published: July / August 2008
Baseball, basketball and racquet
sports are the largest causes of eye injuries in sports
activities. The real tragedy is that most of these injuries are to
children. The junior high school years are the most dangerous, and
boys are involved in almost 90-percent of eye accidents. |
